What’s Wrong and Right?
o Using at least one specific example, how was “sin” treated within this film? Was it glamorized/glorified, or did it receive more of a biblical treatment (redemption, justice, mercy, grace, forgiveness, reconciliation, resolution, etc. etc.) Try to use different examples than the ones mentioned in previous posts. Feel free to disagree with other peoples’ ideas.
o God says we should put nothing “worthless” in front of our eyes. What is good, excellent, redemptive about this film? What was worthwhile? Was anything worthless about it? Can you wholeheartedly recommend this film? To anyone? A pastor? A friend? A sibling? Teacher? Why? Why not? Who would this film NOT be appropriate for and why? Biblically explain and draw your conclusions.

I think the movie condemned the the sin such as the fighting, lying, drunkenness, and other sins in that movie. After when I a saw Tommy's dad get drunk, I thought to myself that I would never get drunk even if my life depended on it. But, like a good son, Tommy calmed down his dad and helped him, after all Tommy's dad was training, helping him become a better fighter.
ReplyDeleteA.J, I thought the movie glotified fighting, not condemned it. When you see how hard these people work towards the goal of winning a tournament that is seeing who is the best at physically hurting people, it proves how desperate people are to make some money, and be famous. However, I do agree with you on how bad it is to get drunk. People do crazy things under the influence, and it gives no excuse for his father to turn to alcahol when he is angry.
DeleteI completely agree with you there Erik the movie did glorify fighting because it showed the joy and happiness that comes from beating someones head in. I do not think God would want two of his creations brutally fighting each other for money and entertainment. Yet sin is also shown through the crowd because it shows how people would pay to watch men try to kill each other. In some ways the crowd is even worse than the men fighting because they are encouraging this horrific way of entertainment. The men fighting don't know the difference because they are doing what pleases the crowd and themselves, yet instead of cheering this on we should work on ways to not to allow this form of mutual hatred between these two fighters to be expressed in the ring.
DeleteI think whats wrong in this movie is the way Tommy and Brendon treat their father. They ignored him after their mom died. Their father wants his sons back but Brendon and Tommy won't forgive their father for what he did in the past. Everyone does or says something they are not proud of. We all need to work harder at forgiving others. The sin in this movie is forgivness. The good thing is that they learn to forgive and trust each other after the fight at the end.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Faith about it being wrong not to forgive their dad but, I feel that that was not the main sin. There was cursing, using God's name in vain and the movie glorified it! They said nothing bad about it and in the context it was not needed nor appropriate for the situation. Another sin was lieing. When Brendon lied to his wife about going to work when the reality was that he was fighting for money.
DeleteI agree with Faith main sin in the movie is hatred. Tommy hated Brendon for leaving the family when he got a wife. Tommy lost his temper at his dad, when he came to meet him in a gambling place. Brendon never lost his temper at his father in the movie, but he bore a heavy grudge against him. He hated his father and wanted him far away from his family. This was not glorified as it expresses the scene in a very tragic tone. Brendon was also mad at Tommy for keeping their mother’s death a secret from him. Both of them hated their father for being a drunk. I also agree with faith that the seen was dealt with biblically. With kindness, forgiveness, repentance, and reconciliation. Tommy got mad at himself when he lost his temper and told his father that he would be better off as a drunk. He also later calmed down his father when he got drunk and started going crazy. Brendon later forgave his brother in the ring when they were fighting. He said, “ You don’t have to do this Tommy!” He also forgave his father and ended the grudge towards the end. Faith is right when she said that you have to forgive because people always will do something they regret later. If you don’t forgive, you will hate a lot of people. Hate never solves anything. It can only eats away the remaining love in your life.

DeleteSorry! the first version had grammatical errors! Please read the reply for my first post.
DeleteI agree with both of you guys, hatred is a major sin in the movie. I also think the movie would not be the same without the sins, lying and secrets. Lying only happened a few times in the story, but I think it effects the story greatly. The first lie I noticed was when Brandon lied to his wife. He promised his wife that he wouldn't fight again, but he still did it, secretly, which is the second sin, again by Brandon. He disobeyed his wife, fought secretly at the parking lot scene. To me these are the two sins that stood out to me the most.
DeleteWhat I would say is redemptive about this film is how the sin was dealt with in the film: with biblical treatment. The main characters all forgave each other at the end of the movie, breaking the grudge. It will change you when you finish watching it. The swearing in the movie was however, worthless. It does make the situation seem more dramatic. But it also prevented a lot of young audiences from watching it and get the important message. Plus using harsh words is not biblical. I would recommend it to anyone that is around my age or older. I would not recommend it to younger audiences as it contains materials that may badly influence them. The movie has a good message and a redemptive storyline, but the swearing can make the little kids start using bad language.
ReplyDeleteDaniel, these are some good thoughts. Well done.
DeleteI totally agree with everyone who says that hatred is one of the main sins in this movie. I found that Warrior shows what hatred can do to your life. When you have a lot of hatred built up you can become broken. Tommy turned to drugs when he was lonely because everyone important to him was gone. Tommy was lonely because of his hatred towards his dad and his brother. They were asking for forgiveness but he would not give any. He was bringing loneliness upon himself. Throughout the movie, it showed the tension between the family because of hatred. It definitely doesn’t make hatred sound desirable. Instead, the movie solves this hatred with forgiveness. The father wanted his son’s forgiveness and Brandon wanted Tommy’s forgiveness. In the end, this forgiveness was given and the hatred went away.
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorite parts of this film were when Brandon and Tommy forgave each other and when Brandon’s wife came to watch him. Both of these scenes showed forgiveness. Brandon’s wife forgave him and came to cheer him on. I think that her being there was really important for Brandon because I think that’s what motivated him to win. But, I really disliked the way their father was treated. But I also have to understand that their father caused them much pain in their childhood because of his alcohol abuse. But, he tried his best to change for his sons and I believe that he deserved a little more respect for that. I could wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone over the age of 13. Not under 13 only because some of the language was bad.
I agree with Emma about the forgiveness in the film. It definitely showed the sin and then dealt with it by all the resolutions towards the end of the movie. Both Tommy and Brendan had refused to forgive their father, even though he had tried to prove them he was now sober. However, they both forgave him and ended up becoming closer because of it. Also, I like how Emma brought up the part about Brendan's wife. I hadn't thought of that as the redemption but it makes total sense. She had been mad at him for fighting, but once she realized he was doing it all for the family, she forgave him and even came and watched him fight.
DeleteI completely agree with Emma and Maggie. Hatred is definitely a main theme in this movie. There is an obvious hatred between the boys and between them and their father. But I also sensed an underlying theme of hatred of life from Tommy. He was so focused on the negative in his life that he ended up turning to drugs instead of forgiveness. The movie did resolve the problem caused by sin biblically. They saw each other's brokenness in the ring, and choose to forgive instead of holding on to the bitterness. I feel like overall the movie showed how sin destroys relationships. It in no way made sin seem good or desirable to me. This film made me really reflect on areas of my life where I am holding on to my hatred instead of choosing the freedom of forgiveness.
DeleteSin was condemned in this movie. One example is when Tommy told his dad that he would be better off drunk. The result was that the dad really got drunk. The scene was shown in a very depressing mood. The sin was dealt with a good treatment though. Tommy comforted his dad when he got drunk. Tommy regretted that he said what he said.
ReplyDeleteYou all have been saying some wonderful things. I wonder... does the Bible have anything to say that can support some of the things you are writing. For example: what does the Bible say about hatred?
ReplyDeleteWell proverbs 10:12 says " Hatred only stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses." I think this is a great verse for this movie because both brothers have hated each other because of their past. Fighting each other only tore them apart more. Until in the last scene when Brendan says to Tommy " I love you Tommy, tap out Tom its okay. This line of love makes things right between them. This line restores their friendship!
ReplyDeleteI really agree with all of you, I think that all of the characters struggle with hatred, that sin was a big part of the movie. Another sin that I saw them struggling with was forgiveness. Colossians 3:13-14 says: “As the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” The two brothers and the dad really had a lot of hatred towards each other, so they were not ready to forgive each other. The Bible says that if you are able to forgive each other and love each other you will have good relationships, but they weren’t ready to let go of the past and forgive, so throughout the movie the 3 of them had messed up relationships because they did not realize that not forgiving was holding them back form loving and accepting each other.
ReplyDeleteI think that maybe this movie was trying to show people how bad sin can be. When you look at the way Tommy and Brendan saw their father after he was an alcaholic, it can give a great example not to fall into anything like that. There was a lot of bad sin in this movie, some not necessary, but the big picture says a lot about redemption and the way sins will always come back to bite. I would recommend this movie to almost anyone, and not just because I thought it was a great movie. The main reason is because the redemption in this story is like redemption in God's story.
ReplyDeleteI think the sin in this movie did receive more of a biblical treatment. Because it showed how the father of the two brothers had sinned because he was an alcoholic, yet he was begging for forgiveness. That showed how he had repented for his sin like when he came to Brendan's house pleading for him to forgive him for his previous behavior. The movie did a great job of turning that sin the father committed into a great lesson and example of the power of forgiveness in this story.
ReplyDeleteOther than "hatred" and its impact on humanity are there any other sin issues? I can think of several. Go back and run the film through your mind. See if you can pick up on some of the different sins that the filmmaker was trying to address with his audience.
ReplyDeleteSelfishness and pride. Brandon wouldn't let his dad back into his life because he thought it was the best thing for him, but he didn't consider how his dad felt about his decision. He looked out only for himself not to the needs of his dad.
DeleteI saw a lot of brokenness throughout this movie. One sin that I think the filmmaker was trying to address was drunkenness. He showed the brokenness that it brought to the family. It showed the regret and tension that it brings. Pop’s drunkenness was dealt with reconciliation. Pop needed to come to an agreement with his sons.
DeleteIn the Bible Matthew 15:4 says, "For God commanded, Honor your father and your mother, and, whoever reviles father or mother must surely die." In the movie Tommy nor Brendan honored their father. Tommy yelled at his father and Tommy yelled and threw coins in his face.
ReplyDeleteI meant Brendan yelled at his father
DeleteI agree with Val. During the movie, I saw a lot of disrespect towards the father. Both of the boys isolated him from their lives because of some previous poor decisions he had made. The bible did not make this sin look glamorous or promote it in any way. It showed us how to forgive those who have hurt us in the past because of nothing we had done. It also shows how God can redeem the sinful.
DeleteAnother sin issue in the movie, is when Brendan does things without telling his wife. First He goes to that fight tournament in a casino or whatever that thing was. He didn't tell his wife and she gets mad at him. Then the school finds out and he gets suspended from teaching a physics class. So the movie condemns that sin. Next he signs up for Sparta which is an MMA championship, without telling his wife. His wife does get mad but not as mad as the first time. I am surprised that the wife didn't start screaming at him because the best MMA fighters will be there, and he could get killed! Brendan calms her down by telling her its for our family's own good. The movie doesn't condemn this sin, and that frustrated me during the movie!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of bad things in this movie that show meaning. Like when Tommy gave the drugs to his father it showed us that he was all messed up. Also there was a lot of drinking. Like when his father got drunk. It showed us their father doesn't make very good choices. Another thing was the cussing. There was a lot of cussing in this movie. But it also made the fighting real. I mean most of the fighters are going to cuss. It just shows you what is going on in real life. I thought that most of this sin was necassary. I would recommend this movie to anyone above 13 because there is not very clean stuff in it. But it means a lot spiritualy.
ReplyDeleteI’d say another theme is to love your enemies. In this case, Brendan’s enemy was his dad, and later Tommy too. His dad has made his and Tommy’s lives miserable when they lived with him. He was an alcoholic. Tommy kept a big secret from to Brendan by not telling him about his mother’s death because he left his family with his wife. Both of them have did something really bad to Brendan, but he no longer treats them as enemies at the end of the movie. Brendon told Tommy that he loved him and led Tommy through the crowd as if he was also a victor. Brendan never told his father that he truly forgives him, but you can tell by the way Brendan looked at his dad when he won that the grudge is over. They are now one family. This is a very biblical message because Matthew 5: 43-45 says that you should love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you so that you are closer to God.
ReplyDeleteI think I would recommend this movie to anyone who is struggling with decisions in life and anyone who is feeling really guilty about past decisions they have made. This movie really emphasizes the power of forgiveness and I think that a lot of people who are struggling with guilt need to hear the message this movie sends. I think this movie also sends a message about hatred. Tommy and Brendon really did hate their father for the decisions he had made and throughout the movie we see how that hatred had messed up their lives, especially Tommy's. Tommy turned to drugs for comfort and we see how much that messed up his life and how broken all of his decisions made him. In the end of the movie we see Tommy pull through and show the amazing power of forgiveness to his father and his brother.
ReplyDeleteI think jealousy is a big sin in the movie especially with all of the fighting and glory, like when "Mad Dog" lost misserably to Tommy in the practice fight, mad dog was jealous and prideful because he wanted to get payback and win the fight. There is another sin, drinking in the movie, but I think the film condemns it because it shows the bad it does to you by showing the dad get drunk and show how unstable he was and how he could not function.

ReplyDeleteSin was common in this movie. We saw many thing like drinking, drugs, and dishonoring of the father. But I felt like the characters were learning from there mistakes, almost like they were coming together as the sins occurred, but piece by piece.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend this movie to mostly anyone, Unless you think your not comfortable with all that goes on in the movie. Over all the movie was outstanding.
I really agree with Emily on who I would recommend this movie to. I think that anyone looking for redemption and forgiveness from past mistakes would benefit from watching. However, I also think people who aren't necessarily unhappy with the guilt in their life could benefit as well, because it will help them make better decisions on how to deal with conflict in the future. Once they see what happened with the grudges the boys held against their father and each other and how negatively it affected them, they will realize they don't want that to ever happen to them. This will come to mind next time they make a mistake and they will know to forgive and ask for forgiveness immediately so that they don't end up like Tommy or Brendan with so much hatred in their heart. I think this movie was a good eye-opener to how our actions and choice to forgive others can really affect us later on. I think that any Christian (or anyone else) over the age of 13 should see this because of how the theme of forgiveness was shown, but there was some cussing and drug/alcohol abuse shown as well.
ReplyDeleteOne sin I noticed in the movie was drinking. The father struggled with consequtive drinking. But the sin was not glorified. The film showed the consequences of the father's bad actions of over drinking. It did a good job of it too because it showed how it got him separated from his family. The sin was necessary for the story because it needed that action to help the story line. It, in a way, showed redemption because he went a thousand days without alcohol but his family still didn't forgive him right away so again, shows consequence. Another thing this film showes is how holding a grudge can hurt you. If you do not forgive, hatred and anger can get bottled up in your heart and tear you apart. The main characters in this story had trouble with forgiving, and as a result, it hurt them. This movie did a great job of showing sin, and that you can overcome it if you try.
ReplyDeleteI would also recomend this movie to families. I mean, anyone could learn something from watching it, but I feel like this film mostly reflects on broken families. A family can learn, by watching this, that familys will have problems. It is a sinful world. There is lying, grudges, and anger in the midst of families in this fallen world. This movie revolves around a broken family, so I feel like families could relate to this and reflect to this film. They could also learn a thing or two from how the family deals with these issues.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was condemned because he forgives him in the end and they walk out together and after reading a few comments (The first Erik, George, and A.J) I partly agree and disagree because the fans loved watching the painful action, but the two brothers didn't get entertainment out of the fight and also in the end Brendan wasn't getting up in his face saying oh I beat you he was being a loving protective brother after and before the fight.
ReplyDeleteYou see a lot of Drinking in the movie and see a result of drinking too much, from the dad. There was jealousy in the movie with the brothers. Tommy got more attention as a kid then Brendon. We also see jealousy when Brendan was mad at Tommy because Tommy was taking care of his mother and didn't let Brendon know that his mom was sick and he never got to say goodbye to his mother.
ReplyDeleteYes i agree, there was a lot of sin in this movie. Like when Brendan was lying to his wife about going to the ring to fight. Also when Tommy was trying to hit Brendan after the referee called the round over. I think Tommy had a ton of sin in this movie. So did their father. I also thought it was wrong how the two brothers treated their father. Even if he does do bad things when they where little and was never there for them they still really treated him bad. And when he asked for forgiveness from Brendan, Brendan just ignored his offer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Nathan. Tommy was just trying to be prideful and shove it in Brendans face by punching after the round was over. Proverbs 11:2, "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom." The Bible doesn't want us to be prideful. And yes, the way the boys treated their father was not right. They should've given him a second chsnce as Jesus gave us a second chance. They were just being stubborn and didn't want to accept the fact that he was trying to change for them.
DeleteI think the lying in this film was definitely condemned. When Brendan went behind his wires back to fight in a parking lot he was showed justice by the school because he was suspended from his teaching job. His wife showed him grace by allowing him to go to the gym and try to start up his MMA career again. Then when he signed up for SPARTA without her permission she showed him mercy by not making him quit it, but there was a hint of justice because she refused to watch the first couple matches.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ashley, he was served justice almost every time. He got suspended from his job and his wife refused to watch him, she eventually forgave him which was showing mercy, but when she came to watch him at the arena she was showing grace.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the idea that there was loads of sin in this movie. The lying, drugs and ways that Brendan and Tommy treated their father. Some people might think they were treating their father with justice, but the Bible says to honor your parents. That is not exactly what they did. Mercy, grace and justice were seen many times in Warrior. Brendan's wife showed him mercy for forgiving him for lying, grace was shown when Brendan's wife came to the matches and supported him and justice when Brendan was suspended from work.
DeleteOne sin that was a little glamorized but not much, was Brendan fighting in the match outside the bar. The part that was glamorized was that he earned money off it and it gave him confidence to get back into fighting. The part that wasn't as good for him was he was suspended from his job as a teacher, that stopped the money that was already a little bit on the low side and put him and his family in a difficult problem. I think this was treated with more of a biblical view, he was punished for something he did wrong that wouldn't be a good influence on the kids he was teaching. Although the fighting wasn't a large sin in my opinion, he was doing some extra work to earn money.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteAnother sin that I saw was, Brandon not listening to what his wife had to say about what he should do next, but did not listen and started fighting anyway. Also in the film there was no religion but if he was christian he did not ask God for help on what ha should do next.
I think that I agree with Madeline that Brendan and his wife's relationship was definitely not as strong as it should have been. When God created male and female and when he created marriage he wanted it to be pure and holy. He wanted their relationships to be strong and built on the truth of the gospel. God says that when male and female marry each other they become one in body and spirit. "The two will become one flesh." Is said in the opening book of Genesis. I think that Brendan and his wife's relationship doesn't model what God intended for marriage.
ReplyDeleteIn reply to what Emily said, I think that you need to remember that we’re not perfect and relationships/marriages aren't either. I wouldn't call it a bad thing that they had to test their trust in each other, because at the end it just made their relationship stronger and better. A marriage/relationship wouldn't be good at all if it didn't have hardships. Maybe Brendan's wife should have trusted him. It can be either way around. Yes they sinned against each other, and its a bad thing, but relationships are never perfect. God intended many things for man, but because of the fall that image is broken like marriages/relationships are.
DeleteI am not sure if it is a sin but lack of trust occurred in the movie a lot. Almost every character expressed it. The brothers didn't trust their dad and Brendan's wife didn't trust Brendan. Instead of trusting in God the trusted in different things like the MMA
ReplyDeletePsalm 118:8 says,
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.
They never listened to each other in the movie. they only cared about what they had to say themselves. That really annoyed. But one thing that I could agree with is their determination to win this competition. That was the one thing they were on the same page.
ReplyDeleteLike Nathan said trust is a big sin in this movie, but I would go even farther to say, lack of trust caused other sins. For instance Brendan didn't trust in God to provide, so he went to fight in a match held in a parking lot. Brendan needed to learn to trust in God for the first time.
ReplyDeleteEveryones talking about the fact that both of the brothers are not trusting in God, but I don't even think there Christian. Or the movie just didn't mention it. But from what I know they're not and I think that if they were to find Christ there lives would be tons easier to forgive, forget, and ect. I think that because of their disbelief the sin was greater and harder to take in. If they were christian the story would be completely different.
DeleteI think that Brendan and Tommy are probably not Christians. I agree with Georgia that their lives would have been a lot easier if they had known Christ and had a strong relationship with him. Tommy and Brendan sin a lot throughout the movie and It's obvious that they really need God's forgiveness for all of those situations. I think that the movie really emphasizes forgiveness and this is definitely something that the brothers and their dad need.
