Brendan Conlon: I'm sorry Tommy! I'm sorry... Tap out Tom! It's OK! It's OK! I Love You! I Love You Tommy!
What does redemption and reconciliation mean?
The final scene of Warrior has been described as “a scene of Redemption and Reconciliation”. In what ways do you think that statement is true? Explain. If you disagree with the statement, why?
What characters are in need of redemption? Why? What characters are in need of reconciliation? Does the Bible have anything to say about those things? What? Should we seek out reconciliation with other people? Is there ever a time when we should not?
Do Brendan and Tommy have a right to treat their father they way they do? Explain.
No. The bible says to honor your father and your mother. Even though he did all thoughts crazy, and terrible things to make Brandon runaway, Brandon still forgave him, just Jesus. When sinned, and still sin today but God still forgave us. He still loves just like Brandon still loved dad and his brother. In the fighting tournament, Tommy and Brandon's dad, cheered on Brandon even though he knew that Brandon was not happy with at the time. Same with God. He still goes after and helps us when we are mad at him. What a great God.
ReplyDeleteI agree with A.J. about what the Bible says about honoring your father and your mother, but I think the movie needed the kids to treat their father that way to stress the importance of parents needing to be a good role model for their kids. It describes to us the way drinking and drugs can breakup and ruin a family. It also showed me how much the father needs/wants to be redeemed in his sons’ hearts. He wants to have a loving family even though he messed it up. The only difference between him and his sons’ relationship and our relationship with God is that in his relationship, he the father messed up, but in our relationship, us the children messed up. In the conclusion of both relationships the people that messed up came back to ask forgiveness (or to ask for reconciliation). When we become parents we should be good role models for our children, so that they can be good role models for theirs.
DeleteI agree with Nathan and A.J. Their father had given up on his old life when the kids left to be on their own. Instead of being a drunk he became a christian. They should've forgiven their father because he messed up and he saw that and actually fixed it by going to Christ and they should've forgiven him.

DeleteI do agree with all of you, yet it is not as simple as it seems. I know as Christians we should forgive, but I don't think the movie ever showed that Tommy and Brendan were Christians. Since they were not Christians they had hate in their heart and new not to forgive. Also we should put ourselves in Tommy and Brendan's shoes. If your father was an abusive drunk when you were a kid how easy would it be for you to forgive him.
Yes, I agree. Nobody should treat their mother or father like that. Even though he did bad things in his past you still should forgive him just like God. We sin and do bad stuff and always turn to God for forgiveness. And God always forgives us no matter how bad of stuff we did. I think Brendan should of forgave him.

ReplyDeletethink the final scene of the movie showed redemption because Tommy is being redeemed through getting beat and finally knowing that he's not the best and the situation makes him not as selfish and it redeems there friendship/brother, but I do not think there is rconciliation because they truly have not forgave each other for what they have done or haven't done. I think Tommy is in need of redemption because he needs to not think like he is better than everyone else
ReplyDeleteI disagree, I don't think Tommy thinks he is better than everyone else. I actually think that he is a very humble character. First of all, Tommy was a war hero and no one knew. Tommy could have told everyone what he had been through and what he had done but he chose to keep it to himself. Second, whenever he won a fight he just walked out of the ring. At first I thought he did that because he thought he was too cool. I eventually saw that when these men would win, they would run around and gloat and celebrate. Tommy didn't want to be glorified, he just wanted to win to help out his best friend's wife. He didn't want the money for himself.
DeleteI half agree with Emma. I believe Tommy is humble in ways but I think he kept his past in the war to himself because he was hiding the fact that he abandoned his unit. And that cost the life of his comrade, so he felt he needed to redeem his sinful actions by winning the prize money to support his comrade's wife. So I think he was trying to protect his identity which is why he started going by his late mother's maiden name.
DeleteI think the final scene is an example of redemption because Brandon and Tommy hadn't ever forgiven each other and both believed they had done the right actions. However, when Brandon was telling Tommy it okay and that he loved him, he was showing redemption because he was saying that it was all going to be okay and that he still did love him. The dad and both sons are all in need of redemption because they all sinned and affected each other with those sins. The Bible says that we should forgive those who sin against us, even if it hurt us.
ReplyDeleteWhere does the Bible say that?
DeleteIn (Matthew 5:43-45a) it says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.
DeleteI agree with Kurop in saying that in Brandon’s heart and with his words he redeemed his brother Tommy. Although, I also believe that with his words he was telling Tommy how much he was being hurt by Tommy not forgiving him. The way Brandon said the words, “Tom I love you…,” told me that he was even more hurt inside that his brother was outside. I am still not sure the movie gave me enough proof of Tommy forgiving Brandon for me to call it a full reconciliation, but it probably hinted to that happening later.
I feel like this is an excellent example of redemption. I think this because throughout the movie it showes what each of them struggle with (Tommy with pride, their father with drinking, and Brendan has trouble forgiving his family). When Tommy taps out, it's like that's his way of giving up, and realizing hje is not better that others. When Brendan says, "I'm sorry. I love you" he is apologizing to and forgiving Tommy at the same time. And the way he loooks at his father as he walks off, it looks like he is finally forgiving him too. This is very much redemptive in broken relationships.
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with Schick. I agree that when Brendan is apologizing, he is forgiving him, but Tommy didn't think he was better than anyone else. He gave up because Brendan dislocated his shoulder and couldn't move his arm. But there's one thing we have to remember, they were both fighting for another person, Tommy was fighting for his friend's wife and Brendan was fighting for his family so they still had a home. It's a great way to show redemption because Brendan was apologizing and was sorry for what he did to him in the ring and everything else that he did. And when Tommy tapped out and walked out with his brother, it was like Tommy forgave Brendan too.
DeleteI agree with Walsh. The bible does say that you should forgive, even when it is your enemy and it is hard to do. God forgave us, and we sin against Him all the time and tend to treat Him very poorly. It was probably very hard to forgive Tommy but the movie shows that he did anyway, despite thir rough past, and they still love each other. I think this and a lot of traits and themes in this movie agree with the bible.
ReplyDeleteI think the final scene is a fantastic example of redemption and reconciliation. Brendan needed to redeem himself by winning the money to pay off the debt on his house since he was suspended as a teacher. Tommy, on the other hand, needed to redeem what he did to his dead comrade by winning the money to support his comrade's wife and her family.
ReplyDeleteBrendan, Tommy, and their father all desperately needed to overcome their past difficulties and reconcile. They have no excuse for avoiding each other because everyone is painfully sinful on earth, yet Jesus still forgave us. So there's no reason why they themselves can't reconcile and forgive each other. When Brendan apologized to Tommy they reconciled, and when they walked out arm in arm and made eye contact with their father I believe they silently reconciled and forgave each other.
We should always attempt to reconcile because the Bible calls us to. Ephesians 4:32, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."
No. The bible says honor your father and your mother. In the movie they say they forgive their father, but they should have showed the forgiveness. I think if they really forgave their father they would've tried to fix their relationship with their father and let past be the past and start fresh. Also, they should have started fresh because their father stopped drinking and was really trying so gain a closer bond with them, but they both were so stuck on what he did in the past they couldn't see what he was trying to do in the present.
ReplyDeleteRedemption means making something better or more acceptable. Reconciliation means people becoming friendly after an argument or a disagreement. I agree with the statement about the final scene being redemption and reconciliation. Brendan sort of redeemed himself with his brother. He was telling him to tap out because it wasn't worth it to fight each other. He was telling Tommy how he still loved him and that he was sorry. Thinking about it as reconciliation we saw Tommy and Brendan met up on the beach to talk with each other. Tommy was telling Brendan that he felt betrayed that Brendan didn't come with him and his mom. But Brendan was trying to make things better with Tommy. In the ring we saw from the beginning that Brendan did not want to fight his brother, but he did and as it went on we saw him try to continuously talk Tommy out of it. All I think Tommy wanted while he was growing up was his big brother and in the ring he finally saw that as Brendan went with him and protected him from everyone.
ReplyDeleteWhile everyone is talking about honoring your father and mother, I would like to agree. Even though their dad drank, and was an alcoholic while they were growing up they still need to honor him. But in this world we live in not everyone reads the Bible and agrees with that. They think that if someone is mean to you, you can not be nice in return. Their dad needs redemption with his sons, and the only way he can do that is with them agreeing with him.
ReplyDeleteTommy is pretty hard-hearted. You might remember this moment:
ReplyDeleteTom Conlon: So you found God, huh? That's awesome. See, Mom kept calling out for him but he wasn't around. I guess Jesus was down at the mill forgiving all the drunks. Who knew?
Do you guys think that while Paddy (the father) hurt his boys that it is really up to them to forgive their dad? Or is it OK for the boys to keep their distance? Do you blame them for being skeptical that their father has changed?
When someone sins against you, should you be the first to seek out reconciliation? Or should you wait? Does the Bible help us when we face situations like this? Where?
I think that it is important for Tommy and Brendan to forgive there father. They will probably always have the thought of what their dad did and how that affected them in the back of their minds, but i think its important to still respect your parents. I would probably be skeptical of the change to if I was them. The dramatic change would be hard to believe, but they should find trust in their father.
DeleteI agree with Georgia, it is important to forgive one another so that you don't go to the grave knowing you have unresolved conflicts that you can't fix now because you are dead. Also God tells us to treat others how we want to be treated and the brothers would want their dad to forgive them if they had made a mistake.
DeleteI think that because the father came back to his boys, and asked for forgiveness they should forgive him.
DeleteYes I do believe that if someone sins against you and it affects you. You should go and try to seek out reconciliation with them, however, you do need to do it in a nice way and not be a jerk about it for example don't constantly use it against them in the future. Especially if you didn't tell them about it when it happened. In Ephesians 4:32 it says, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."
I agree with Nathan. Their father came back to them because he realized what he had done in the past and he tried to fix it. It's better to fix it now then to not fix it at all and I think he did the right thing in going to God to forgive him and following God.
DeleteI think that at the beginning of the movie when the boy’s father approached them it was ok for them to keep their distance but eventually think they took it too far. Their father was suffering because he couldn't regain his son’s trust. I think that they should have been a little more gracious and forgiving.
DeleteI think that the boys should still forgive their dad for what he has done and move on because for every sin that we have sinned God still forgave us. But I do not blame them for trying to keep their distance from him and being skeptical about the way he has changed. When you sin against someone i think you should be the first to want reconciliation with the person that you hurt because if you dont the sin will grow bigger between the two or however many people you have hurt.
ReplyDeleteI think that the boys need to forgive their father, but that really isn't that important. I think it's more important for God to forgive him. God cares more about our relationship with him, more than our relationship with other people. I also do think it is okay for the boys to keep their distance from their father, but they should still love and forgive him.
ReplyDeleteI disagree trent because forgivness is very important. The dad has now no family and he needs that! I think if they kept distance from each other then they wouldn't ever be a real family again and the father couldn't reddem himself.
DeleteI agree with Trent that God really takes to heart our relationship with him. But I also think he really cares about our relationships with people. God could have just made Adam and Adam and God could have had a great relationship, but God made Eve because he needed a relationship with others.
DeleteI also disagree because, yes God needs to forgive him but he also needs the boys to forgive him or else nothing changes for the boys or the Dad. What's the point of him going to God but not trying to fix the problem also. He needs his sons back because if he doesn't get them back, he has no family anymore.
DeleteI agree with Georgia and Sarah the boys need to forgive their father God teaches us that in the bible. I don't blame Tommy and Brendan for being skeptical about their dads change in behavior. I would be a little skeptical if my dad who I haven't seen in years came to me and said he was a changed man, but I do think they should have faith in God and believe their dad has changed for the better.
ReplyDeleteThe redemption is when Brendan says it's okay I love you because he's trying to fix a bad family situation that they from and say forget and forgive even though we have been in this together and separate we both are hardened, but we can still forgive. God has a meaning for everyone and I think that his meaning for Brendan is to wake Tommy up as the big brother and say right we're in this together so lets finish it together. I can connect though as a big brother and say (just like Brendan) I know it's been tough, but we can do this with God's help.
ReplyDeleteI blame them that them being skeptical. I would feel the same in that situation. I find it normal for a person to be that way when someone treated you badly. That reminds me a movie I watched in english last year called "Pozo". It was about an african citizen who had a disability, specifically he only had one leg. He wants to become a professional soccer player, but he has a disability. He then sets a an amazing goal; he wants to help Africa with its disability problem. So the movie goes on about him raising money for the people who need wheel chairs and other things. Near the end of the movie the main character's (Pozo) dad wants to come back to his original family, Pozo's. In the beginning of the movie, Pozo's dad left his family to go to another family. As in the movie warrior, Pozo was skeptical about it, but he did accept his dad into the family. See, Pozo situation was worse then Tommy's and Brandon's situation. So that proves that you forgive someone no matter how bad they are. Remember, you are no better than that person. It says Roman 3:11-18:“There is no one righteous, not even one;
ReplyDelete11 there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.”
13 “Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit.”
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”
14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and misery mark their ways,
17 and the way of peace they do not know.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
I sort of agree with this A.J. Different people forgive others in different ways. Even though Pozo may have been in a worse situation It could have affected him less than Brendan and Tommy or in different ways. They could of been more sensitive or such than Pozo. You never really know what went on with their heart. I agree that Tommy and Brendan could have tried harder, but the situation can change how easy or hard it is to forgive.
DeleteTommy and Brendan both need redemption and I personally think that the dad needed it the most. He had done drugs and never really cared about the boys. I think that at the end of the movie that last seen was showing you that love is in redemption. Tommy and Brendan were redeeming themselves because they love each other. There is redemption there because they forgive each other, they redeem themselves, they love each other once again and they show it. On the other hand, they do not have the right to treat their father that way! One of the Commandments is to obey your mother and father and respect them. They have a reason to go against God but a reason is a reason and God is God.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rachel that all three of the main characters needed redemption. Especially the father. Tommy and Brendan’s family was torn apart at a young age when their father became a drunk. This experience causes Tommy to run away with his mother. Brendan was engaged, however, so he left them and lived with his wife. Tommy was angry and when his mother died, he didn’t tell Brendan. This was how the tension between them was formed. Brendan and Tommy hated their father for being bad and each other for keeping secrets. In the end, they were all redeemed in the ring, and loved each other once again. I also agree with Rachel that they shouldn’t treat their father that way. Exodus 21:17 says anyone who disrespects their parents must be put to death. Even if his father was a drunk, they shouldn’t have treated him like they did. Even if they have a reason, they are still committing a sin.
DeleteYes, I agree with Rachel. All three of them really low and in need of redemption. Brendan is lying to his wife. Tommy and his dad are both doing drugs and drinking a lot of alcohol. When the last scene comes around Brendan's dad is rooting for Brendan and Tommy. He tries to show Tommy some forgiveness by his ways in the casino. Tommy comes and comforts his dad when he is drunk. Then when the two brothers meet in the ring and fight it out they both forgive each other in some way and clean their ways.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Nathan and Rachel. All three members of the family were in definite need of redemption. They had each sinned on there own personal way, but in general ways, Tommy and Brendan had both been cruel to their father after he had quit drinking for some time. Also, Brendan and their father had never reached out to Tommy and sort of left him on his own once he left with their mother. Family should not do that each other. Also, Tommy and their father were both big into drinking and/or drugs which caused Brendan to shelter his children away from them. These all help divide the family until it is barely hanging on there by a thread. I think that once the brothers were forced to face each other, they were able to wipe the slate clean, which would eventually lead to them forgiving their father and opening up to him again, even if the movie doesn't show it. Redemption was a theme in this movie and I think it portrayed well, because of all the sins spread between Tommy, Brendan, and their father.
DeleteI disagree with Trent and agree with Rachel, how can you move on in life if you don't forgive. In Proverbs 10:12 it says "Hate stirs up fights. But love erases all sins by forgiving them." I think what that is saying when you don't forgive it starts up trouble which what happened in the movie.
ReplyDeleteI see what your saying faith. You really cant move on unless it is totally done with and forgotten but for it to be forgotten you have to forgive. Proverbs 10:12 is right! You cant just hold a grudge but move on. It unethical.
DeleteI think That even though the dad messed up. The sons should forgive them after all it was a long time ago. I didn't get why they ignored there dad. I know they were mad at him but I think they should talk about it. Not push away from each other. They're adults they should be able to do that kind of stuff.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the movie I think that the last scene was redemptive. It was one of those scenes that you love and hate to watch at the same time. It was redeeming because after Brendan beat his brother he helped him up and into the locker room together, Because earlier in the movie they had been fighting and by the end of the movie they were hugging. I think that the characters in need of redemption are the two brothers and the dad. They had a messed up relationship and were either fighting or they would not talk to each other. In Ephesians 1:7-8 it says: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us”. Jesus gave us redemption and grace, so it was cool to see the brothers relationship redeemed.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a true statement because you can see that the family is bonding together again. Brendan led Tommy through the halls like they were both victors. When he said that he loved him, it was not a sarcastic comment. It was genuine reconciliation. Throughout the movie, you never hear Tommy or Brendan say I love you to their dad, but in the end, the way that Brendan looked at his dad basically tells you that they have reconciled.
ReplyDeleteI think the dad needs redemption and all three need reconciliation. The dad was an alcoholic and a drug addict when Tommy and Brendan were young. This caused a lot of trouble and pretty much tore the family apart. He did a lot of fault in his past and need to be redeemed and change. Since the family is torn apart, all members need to be reconciled with one another. Ephesians 4: 32 says to forgive one another just as Christ forgave us. The bible wants us to forgive and be reconciled with people. We should always seek reconciliation, even if we are the ones wronged. You shouldn’t not seek reconciliation because if you don’t, tension will build and hatred may eventually form, which is bad.
Even if they had all the reasons in the world, they still shouldn’t disrespect their father. They have done nothing wrong for being skeptical of their father when he returned many years later claiming he has changed. But the way they treat him is very wrong. Brendan has a hostile attitude when he talks to his father and Tommy curses at him. The worst sin they commit in the movie is they hate their parent. The bible tells us to always honor your father and mother. They are clearly not doing that throughout most of the movie.
I think this scene is a sign of redemption because Brendan says he loves Tommy. He says everything will be all right. Meaning that they will probably become close brothers again. All three characters needed redemption. They all did bad things. Brendan lying to his wife. He needed forgiveness and got redeemed. Tommy did drugs and drank and some what got redeemed. The boys dad drank and was not close to Brendan as a dad and he got redeemed.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the scene of Tommy forgiving his dad was a great sign of redemption because even though Tommy's dad did a terrible thing, like us sinning, Tommy managed to forgive his dad.
DeleteReconciliation means- the restoration of friendly relations
ReplyDeleteThis movie did a good job of describing how important family relations are. Even though it had a LOT of MMA fighting in it, it still got its main point across about broken relationships. It also did a good job of keeping suspense in the story until the very end. While there was a suspenseful fight at the end there was also an amazing ending to the broken relationships in the movie. An amazing reconciliation between the brothers and Mabel the father too. It teaches me to look for the hidden Biblical ending to movies I watch in the future.
I think this is just an okay story of redemption. Even though it looked like Brendan forgave Tommy, I think some of the blame was on Brendan too. If Brendan was supposed to be like God, I think there were some major flaws. When Tommy confronted Brendan behind the arena, I could see that Tommy was very mad at Brendan. So for Brendan to play the part as God in this movie seems like a stretch because Tommy explained how his brother turned his back on him, something God will never do.
ReplyDeleteI feel like this was a great picture of redemption and restoration. At the beginning of the movie, like Mr. Scott mentioned, Tommy was a cruel and hard hearted character. He was competitive since the begging, and would let nothing step in his way of winning. But during the final scene, Tommy taps out kind of symbolizing that he that he is sorry and wants to mend what is broken. I think Brendan saw how hurt his brother really was during the fight, and wanted to make things right with him.
ReplyDeleteI think that they had a right to be angry with their father as he was an alcoholic, but after that when he was brought to Christ I think after that they had no right to make fun of him. Here's a hard difference, they can not like how he used to be, but like who he is now kind of like Brendan Tommy on the other hand doesn't like his father at all:Don't come down here like you're all perfect and try to apologize like nothing happened get out of here. That shows he doesn't have heart and only cares about himself.
DeleteTommy is definitely very hard hearted and tough. I think that he is still very hurt about what his father did to him so long ago. However, I think that when he goes back to his father for help in training it shows that he really needs his family and wants a relationship with his family. When Tommy taps out it is a very dramatic and important moment in the movie. He is finally forgiving his family for everything and is finally showing that he does have a heart and does love his brother. He really does love his brother and I think, he even also loves his dad. Tommy is finally coming through and is also apologizing and saying he wants to fix what is broken in his life.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with Emily, but I think Tommy was tapping out just out of not getting hurt. He did love his brother, but just right near the very end of the story. If you noticed in the movie, both brothers fight when something is bothering them. Both of their lives were shutting down, as in losing a lot of things they care about and felt everything was coming to an end. I think if only one of the brothers life was shutting down, lets say Brandon, then Tommy still might not have cared let alone love Brandon. The fact that bad things happened to both of the brothers, that makes the story, the story. If it only happened to one of the brothers, the story would have changed drastically because their be no one to support who ever.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Maggie that all 3 of the characters needed redemption. Another thing I just thought of was that the dad was kind of already redeemed because he had realized how selfish he was being and wanted to change. And throughout the movie the brothers slowly reunited, and probably let there father back in.
ReplyDeleteI do believe this is a redemptive scene, because it was like taking all of the hatred between the two brother and have it flow away. It was a scene of forgiveness. I can't speak for all people, but for some when I say this was a scene of redemption.
ReplyDeleteI doesn't matter how it happened, just that it happened. And isn't it great that what happened at the end resolved in forgiving each other. I just thought it was really cool, It makes me smile just thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteLike everybody said this movie shows redemption. I think was a great movie for us to watch. I think that redemption is a great thing for us to see. Someday we might be involved in a conflict with a family member or a friend and this movie is a great example of how to fix a relationship thats been badly damaged.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the movie ended on a very high note. Brendan got the money to save his house, and he restored his relationship with his brother. Yet I don't remember seeing much more redemption happen in the film. Brendan and Tommy did not openly forgive their father and you never see what happens to Tommy s best friends wife. She was desperately in need of the money, so did it make it wrong the Brendan was taking it for himself. After watching the movie I still have a lot of questions to myself on what was really redeemed.
ReplyDeleteRedemption means to rescue or to deliver. Reconciliation means to come to an agreement. I think that the final scene in Warrior is a scene of redemption and reconciliation because Brendan and Tommy come to an agreement and they are rescued from the tension in their relationship. I definitely think that their father was in need of reconciliation. He needed to come to an agreement with his sons. I think that Tommy needed redemption even if he didn’t know it. Tommy needed to be rescued by his dad and brother. I definitely think we should seek out reconciliation with other people. When you are fighting with someone, you can’t resolve the conflict without reconciliation.
ReplyDeleteMr. Scott's class is finished with the project.
ReplyDelete
